The Senate passed a bipartisan election oversight bill Friday, sending the
measure to the president's desk after months of negotiation between party
leaders.
The bill introduces new post-election audit requirements for federally
funded voting systems and expands funding for state-level election
security upgrades. Supporters on both sides of the aisle framed the vote
as a rare moment of consensus on a historically contentious issue.
State election officials, who have pushed for clearer federal audit
standards for several years, welcomed the bill's passage. Implementation
guidance is expected within 90 days of the bill being signed into law.
